FRIENDSHIP STORIES
1. THE TRUE FRIEND
Once there were two friends - a squirrel and a puppy. They used to live and play together. The squirrel was very sporty and always won the game. The puppy used to feel bad and thought that it was of no use.One day, it started raining heavily. The squirrel was in high spirits. He started doing antics but suddenly, lost his balance and fell in the rain water.
He called his friend, the puppy for help. The puppy came to his rescue. The squirrel climbed on its back and reached a safe place. He thanked his friend for saving his life.
2. TWO GOATS
Once a goat was grazing on the grassy slope of a hill near a stream. It decided to taste the grass on the hills across. A narrow log served as a bridge across the stream. While crossing the bridge, it saw another goat coming from the other side. The bridge was so narrow that only one animal could cross the bridge at a time.The first goat said to the other, "Let me pass first." "You let me pass first", snapped the other goat.
They started threatening each other and finally got into a terrible fight, so savagely that they lost their balance and fell into the stream.
The other goats grazing on the hills saw this spectacle and learnt a lesson.
After few days, two other goats faced the same problem. They happened to be on the bridge at the same time facing each other and unable to move further.
One goat said to the other, "I'll sit down and you can step over my body." "Thank you. Next time, I'll sit down and let you cross first." Thus both of them were able to cross the bridge safely.
MORAL STORIES
1. A BOUGHT COMFORT ISN'T A BLESSING
One winter day, a wild ass was wandering about aimlessly. Suddenly he came to the edge of the forest where he saw a donkey lying in the warm sun at full length. Quite care-free as the donkey looked, the ass envied him a lot.The wild ass went to the donkey and said, "How lucky you are! Your sleek skin shows how well you live." Saying this, the ass left the place but still kept thinking about the donkey.
After few days, he came again to see the donkey. But this time the donkey had a heavy load on his back. His master was following him with a stick in his hand and was hitting the donkey off and on to make him move at a steady pace.
Seeing this the ass said to himself, "What a pity. I no longer envy him. I didn't know that he has to live such a miserable life and has to buy his comfort at this price."
2. A COWARD CAN'T TEACH COURAGE
Once there lived a hind in a forest. She had a son who had grown very young and strong. She was very happy to see his stout body and branched strong horns and thought, "stags have powerful horns, why should they be afraid of hounds, wolves then? It's sheer cowardice. I would never like my son to do it at all." After some time, the hind's son came there. The hind wanted to teach him to be courageous. She said, "Son! You have a stout body and strong horns. So, you must not run away from hounds and wolves. Don't be a coward." "Ok, mom; I won't", said the stag.Just then the mother and the son heard the bark of the hounds. The hind got ready to run away when her son asked her to stay on. She said, "You may, but I have no horns." Saying so, she ran as fast as she could.
The mother herself was a coward and was teaching courage to her son. What a satire!
3. A FOX AND A CRAIN
Once a fox and a crane became friends. So, the fox invited the crane to dinner. The crane accepted the invitation and reached the fox's place at sunset.The fox had prepared soup for his mate. But as we all know that foxes are cunning by nature, he served the soup in flat dishes. So, he himself lapped the crane's share with his tongue enjoying its relish a lot. But the crane could not enjoy it at all with his long beak and had to get back home hungry. The shrewd fox felt extremely amused.
After few days, the crane invited the fox to dine in with him. The fox reached his place well in time. The crane gave him a warm welcome and served the soup in a jug with a long and narrow neck.
So, the crane enjoyed the soup with great relish using his long beak. The fox's mouth couldn't reach the soup through the narrow neck of the jug. He had to return home hungry. Now he realized that he had been repaid for his behaviour with the crane.
4. A FUSSY CUSTOMER
Once there was a man who was very fussy about food. One day, he felt like having some seafood and went to a restaurant and ordered some oysters.The man said to the waiter, "Please check that oysters are neither too large nor too small, neither too salty not too fried, neither too fat, nor too thin." At this the waiter said, "Do you want them with or without pearls?" The man realized that the waiter was taunting him and understood that one should not be so much fussy about things.
5. A KNOWN ENEMY IS ALWAYS BETTER
Once upon a time, all goats held a meeting against the cruelty of butchers. They wanted to take revenge for their killings. Each goat expressed her idea about how to carry it out. Some of them went as far as to sharpen their horns saying that they would pierce the bellies of the butcher. Seeing the passion running high, old and wise gout stood up and tried to cool down the other goats.
The old goat said, "If we kill the present butchers, some new butchers will take their place. And they will kill us even more mercilessly because of their inexperience. And if we kill them too, more raw-hands will follow. And suppose we kill all the butchers, men will never do without our flesh. They will themselves start killing us. So, drop the idea of killing these butchers. They kill us the easiest way as they know us and our pain well."
6. A LION AND A MOUSE
It was a hot summer day. Sun was shining bright up in the sky. A lion was sitting under the shade of a big tree and in some time got asleep. Nearby that tree, there was a hole, in which there lived a mouse. When the lion was sleeping, the mouse came out of its hole and saw him asleep.
Unaware of the lion's strength, it got tickled by an idea. It thought of waking up the lion by running over his body just for fun.
Unfortunately, the lion seized it in his strong paw. The mouse pleaded for its life. Being generous by nature, the lion set it free. The mouse promised to help the lion if it ever got the chance. The lion laughed aloud at this. After all, how could a tiny mouse help the king of the jungle? A few days later, the mouse was passing through the jungle when he saw the same lion trapped in a hunter's net. Immediately, it set to work, gnawing at the ropes. Very soon the tiny mouse had ser the lion free.
Remember, mercy never goes unrewarded.
7. A MONKEY AND TWO CATS
Once upon a time two cats found a piece of cheese and cut it into two pieces. But one piece was slightly bigger than the other. Both the cats wanted the bigger piece. Then they went ton a monkey and asked to sort out the matter.
The monkey said, "Don't worry. I'll make both the pieces equal. Then it took a bite from the bigger piece. But this made the other piece larger. So it took a bite from the other piece. This continued till the pieces became very small.
Seeing this, the cats pleaded, "Sir! We are satisfied. Let us have the pieces now." The shrewd monkey replied, "This is my fee for sorting out the problem." Saying this, it gobbled up the remaining cheese.
8. A SMALL THING COSTS MUCH
One day, while walking down the road, a father said to his son, "Look, a horseshoe is lying in the mud. Pick it up." The son said, "I hate to pick up things from mud." The father picked up the horseshoe and kept it in his pocket. On reaching the village, he sold the horseshoe and bought some cherries.
Father understood the desire of his son and dropped a cherry on the ground. The son picked it up, washed it and ate it up.
Then the father said to him, "Sometimes even small things cost much. These cherries are because of that horseshoe that you refused to pick up from the mud." The son understood what his father meant.
9. A WILLFULL PERSON EVER SUFFERS
Once upon a time a man was going with his donkey down a hill-road. He was following the donkey with a stick in his hand. The donkey jogged down carefully over some distance. But then suddenly it left the track and strayed aside. Its owner tried his best to drive it back to the track but the willful beast didn't obey. As a result, it reached the edge of a cliff that overlooked a deep gorge.
The owner felt worried to see the donkey in danger. He couldn't understand what to do. So, he caught hold of it's tail when it was about to leap over the edge of the cliff.
The man tried hard to check the donkey from moving ahead but all went in vain. It didn't move even an inch backwards. So the man let it go saying, "All right, go your way to meet your death. What else can I do?"
10. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST
Once a fox was roaming around in a forest looking for food. Suddenly, he saw a pig rubbing his tusks against the trunk of a tree.
The fox looked about carefully but couldn't see any danger for the pig anywhere. Despite being so clever, he couldnt understand why, the pig was doing that.
He couldn't control himself, went to the pig and asked, "The hunters are not out today, nor can I see any other danger, then why are you doing that?" The pig replied, "Dear! We live in a forest where enemies are there at every step. Who knows when I'll have to face them and use my tusks against them? So, if I don't do it now, I may not get time to sharpen my tusks when I need them the most." This story teaches us that always be ready for the bad times to come.
11. ALWAYS BE TRUTHFUL
One day, Princy was alone at home. Her parents had gone to attend a party. Princy saw a stapler lying on her father's table. She picked it up and started playing with it.
She tore the pages of an old book and started stapling them. When the staples got finished, she tried to refill the stapler. As she didn't know how to do it, she broke it.
Princy got scared and left the stapler on the table. `next day, when her father asked her about the broken stapler, she confessed that it was broken by her.
Her father praised her for telling the truth but also asked her not to fiddle with things, which she didn't know how to use.
12. THE MANAGER ALWAYS CARE FOR OTHERS
Once, a rich boy went to visit his native village. It was a sunny afternoon and he was feeling very hungry. So, he bought some food from a farmer and sat under a tree to eat.
Suddenly, he saw a poor boy standing at a distance and found that he was very hungry. He decided to leave some food for the poor boy. But, as he was very hungry, he forgot. He ate all the things. When he drank water, he saw something written at the base of the vessel, "Those who don't care for poor have no right to have food." So the rich boy bought some food for the poor boy and gave it to him.
13. APPEARANCE IS OFTEN DECEPTIVE
One day a deer went to a pool to quench his thirst. The pool water was so clear and still that he could see his reflection in it quite vividly. He looked at the image of his antlers and felt proud of their beauty.
Suddenly, his eyes fell on the reflection of his fore-legs. Though slender to look at, they gave him his high speed. But he felt sad seeing them. With heavy heart, he quenched his thirst hardly, had he raised his head when he saw a lion coming towards him. So, he took to his heels and the lion was left far behind.
The deer took a sigh of relief. But unfortunately, his antlers got caught in a thicket. He tried his best to be free but could not. In the meantime, the lion came quite closer.
The deer now cursed himself for condemning his legs and praising his horns. But now he could do nothing. The lion overtook him and tore him to pieces.
The deer was having pride for his horns because of which, he became the food of the lion. On the other hand, he was cursing his legs, which only could save him from the grip of the lion.
14. AS YOU SOW, SO SHALL YOU REAP
Once upon a time a flea saw an ox grazing in a pasture. He knew that oxen work for men in their farms. But he didn't like it. He was proud that he fed on men's blood and yet didn't do anything for them.
Approaching the ox, the flea asked, "How is it so that you work for men though you are quite big and strong? Look at me, I never do anything for them and yet feed on their blood though I am so small." The ox was surprised to hear what the flea had said and replied, "If I work for men, they are very kind to me. They take care of mine in every way, feed me, shelter me and moreover, pat me on my back, head and neck out of love and affection.
On the other hand, you feed on their blood and they are always up to destroy you." Behaviour always counts.
15. BEAUTIFUL IS NOTHING ETERNAL
Once there was a gardener having a beautiful garden of flower-plants-mostly rose plants. By chance a lily plant blossomed near a rose-bush.
Lily is believed to yield flowers that never fade and have an everlasting beauty. But the rose flowers have a short life.
The lily said to the rose, "How beautiful you are! What an aroma you possess! No wonder, you are universally a favourite flower. I really envy you.
" The rose replied, "You wouldn't have said so, if you knew the reality. My bloom is very short-lived. I bloom in the morning and by sunset I begin to loose shine. By the next morning I fade completely and then I die. But you are known to have flowers that never fade even if they have been cut. Beauty is only a nine-day wonder."
16. BETTER BENT THAN BROKEN
Once a huge oak tree stood on the bank of a river. It was well nourished by the water of the river. Naturally, it was very strong and had a thick stem. Just nearby, grew some reeds with thin but flexible stems. They stood almost half in water and had flourished well too.
One day, strong winds blew. The tree, though huge and strong, broke from the middle and was thrown across the stream just among the reeds. On the other hand, the tree was very surprised to see that the reeds suffered no harm at all.
The oak could not make out the reason of the safety of the reeds and asked them, "How is it that, you being frail and slender, managed to face the gale without any harm. But I, strong enough, have been broken." The reeds replied, "You were proud of your strength and refused to bend. So, you broke while we bowed and yielded to the gale and were spared."
17. BEWARE OF HYPOCRITES
Once a fox was roaring in a forest searching for food. As to his bad luck, he got caught up in a trap. He tried his best to get free but lost his tail in the struggle. He felt very small, thinking that now, every fox would laugh at him. He felt so sad that he thought of committing suicide. But then he said to himself, "It is cowardice to kill oneself. I should think of something else." At last, the fox planned to persuade all the foxes to part with their tails. So, he called a meeting of all the foxes and said, "We should get rid of our tails as they are heavy, ugly and tiresome." Though, he tried to divert the attention of all the foxes from his tail less appearance, one clever fox noticed it and said, "Sir! you wouldn't have given us this advice, if you weren't tail less. Isn't it?" So, we say, "hypocrisy seldom works"
18. BLAMING NEEDS WISDOM
Once a ship got caught in a violent storm. It wrecked and the waves cast it's wrecks on the sands of the shore. Among them was a sailor who lay senseless on the beach. When he came to his senses, he cursed the sea saying, "The sea is a cheat indeed. It attracts people with it's cool and calm waters and once they are in it's grip, it turns furious and destroys them." Hearing his reproach, the sea felt pinched. But it didn't want to trouble the sailor anymore. So, it came to the sailor in form of a damsel.
"Who are you, O lovely lady?" asked the sailor.
"I am the sea and am as lovely as you see me now. You are blaming me for the wreck but it isn't just." Surprised, the sailor asked, "Who is just then?" The sea urged, "The wreck was caused by the cruel winds that blew into gusts and gales over me and created stormy waves in my calm waters." The sailor had nothing to say except feeling sorry.
19. BLIND IMITATION IS BAD
One day, a saint while going somewhere with his disciples saw a pond full of fishes, on the way. He stopped there and started filling his mouth with fish. The disciples followed their guru. The saint said nothing to them and after some time moved ahead.
Then they reached another pond, where there were no fishes. The saint stood at its shore and started taking out the fishes he had swallowed. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and also tried to vomit out the fishes, but after many attempts, they could only take out some dead fishes.
At this, the saint said, "Fools, when you didn't know how to keep the fishes alive in the stomach, then why did you imitate me?" Its truly said that never imitate anyone.
20. BLIND LOVE BRINGS IN I'LL LUCK
Once upon a time a man used to live in a cottage at the edge of a forest. He had a daughter who was very beautiful.
A lion often used to see the pretty girl during his usual prowl and fell in love with her. So, one day, he went to the girl's father and asked for her hand.
The man was unwilling to give his daughter to a fierce husband. But he didn't have the courage to refuse and offend the lion. So, he thought hard and hit upon a plan.
He said to the lion, "My daughter is afraid of your teeth and sharp nails. She will marry you only if you let me have your teeth pulled out and your nails clipped.
" As the lion was blindly in love with the girl, he at once agreed to the demand without thinking of the outcome. As a result, the lion was totally disarmed. The girl's father beat him with a heavy stick and drove him away.
21. CONCENTRATION
One day, some youths went to a jungle to practice shooting. They kept few pots at a distance and targeted them. None of them could hit even a single pot.
A saint who was watching them started laughing. One of them went to him and asked, "Why are you laughing? Do you know how to shoot?" At this, the saint took the gun and fired at the pots and smashed all of them one by one.
The youths were amazed to see this and asked the saint if he was a magician.
The saint replied, "I am neither a magician nor a sharpshooter. I just concentrated and the result is in front of you. One should always work with concentration." The youths thanked him for the piece of advice.
22. COST OF THE BELL
Everyday, a shepherd used to take his cows for grazing. He had tied a bell to each of the cows he had so that he could know where they were grazing. The best cow had a costly bell tied around her neck.
One day, a stranger was going through the pasture. Seeing the costly bell around the cow's neck, he went to the shepherd and asked if he would sell the bell.
Out of greed, the shepherd sold the bell. But now he could not know where his best cow was grazing.
On getting an opportunity, the stranger stole the cow. Thus, the shepherd lost his best cow just because of his greed.
23. WORK IS WORSHIP
One fine sunny day in winter, a grasshopper was basking in the warm sun. But he was very hungry, as he had not eaten anything since last night.
So, he looked about to find something to soothe his hunger. Suddenly, he saw few ants carrying grains into their hole.
He went up to the ants and asked humbly, "Can you, please, spare few grains for me. I haven't eaten anything since yesterday. So, I am almost starving to death." One of the ants asked the grasshopper, "What were you doing the whole summer? Why didn't you store up the food for the winter season?" The grasshopper replied, "Truly speaking, I spent all the summer singing songs and that's why I couldn't store anything." The ant chucked out a smile and remarked, "Then dance the winter away." The grasshopper pulled a long face and walked away.
So we say "Work is real worship".
24. WICKEDNESS RUINS
Once a wolf was roaming around in a forest in search of a prey. He came near a village that was located at the edge of the forest. There he saw a flock of sheep grazing in a pasture.
While he was planning to kill a sheep, he found a sheep-skin lying by the foot-path. Seeing the sheep-skin, a wicked idea clicked him.
He thought of wearing it and slipping into the flock because then, it would be easy to get a prey.
When the wolf got into the flock, the shepherd drove it to the village. Reaching there he enclosed it in the pen and shut the door immediately. Just then his wife came there and said, "Today I have nothing to cook for dinner. So, kill one sheep for me." The shepherd went into the pen and looked for a meaty sheep. Mistaking the disguised wolf for a sheep, he killed him with an axe.
The wickedness is its own punishment. The wolf wanted a sheep as his prey but himself became the food of the shepherd.
25. WHO IS POOR
Once upon a time, there was a renowned saint. Many people used to visit him to get his blessings.
Once a rich and greedy merchant went to him and offered him a bag full of gold coins. The saint refused to accept the offerings and said, "I don't accept money from people who are very poor." The merchant said, "But I'm very rich." "Don't you wish to earn more money?" asked the saint.
"Yes", said the merchant.
"Those who wish for money always run after it. They can do anything to acquire it. No one is as poor as these people" said the saint.
The merchant felt ashamed and went back to his home.
26. TIME IS VALUABLE
Anthony was a very lazy boy and always used to postpone things. One day his father called him and made him understand the value of time that one should always do things on time. Anthony promised his father that he would never postpone things.
One day, he came to know that he had won the first prize in a singing competition that was held the previous month. He was asked to collect the prize the same day. He didn't care and went to collect the prize the next day. But the prize became useless for him, as it was a ticket to a circus show, which was held the previous day.
Anthony learnt a lesson from this incident.
27. UNION IS A GREAT STRENGTH
Once there was a farmer who had four sons. They were always quarreling with each other. The farmer tried hard to bring them to the right path but they would never pay attention to his advice. He was very worried about their future.
One day, he came across a plan. He called his sons and asked them to bring few sticks. When they brought the sticks, the farmer tied them in a bundle and asked them to try their strength to break it.
Each of the sons tried to break the bundle but failed. Then the farmer untied the bundle and gave one stick each to break. Each of them was able to do it easily.
The farmer said, "Now you understand. If you are united nobody can get better of you. But you keep quarrelling, you will be broken one by one."
28. THE SELFISH HORSE
Once, a trader had a donkey and a horse. Everyday, he would load the donkey heavily and go to the city to sell things.
One hot day, the donkey started feeling dizzy. He asked the horse to take some of his load but the horse refused saying that it was not his duty to carry loads.
Soon the donkey fell down and died due to extreme heat. The trader put all the load on the horse's back and continued his journey.
So, it's true that one who does not help his friend in need has to himself face problems in the long run.
29. THE LITTLE SCHOLAR
Once a shepherd while grazing his cattle in the pastures happened to be seen by the king of that kingdom. The shepherd was in a jovial mood.
When the king asked him the reason of his happiness, the shepherd without knowing that he was the king said, "Shouldn't I be happy? I am happier than the king of our kingdom." When the king asked him to prove this, he replied, "I have the wealth of this nature. The sun gives me warmth and light, the blue sky pampers me and this valley gives me peace of mind. I have enough money to live a comfortable life. Now tell me, does the king have so much wealth?" The king realized that the real wealth is not money but the peace of mind.
30. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
One day a boy was caught stealing onions from a vegetable shop. He was taken to a judge. The judge gave him three choices; eat all the onions in one go, submit to a thousand lashes or pay fine.
The boy without thinking said that he would like to eat all the onions. Very confidently, he started eating the onions but after eating a few, his eyes began to burn, his nose started running and his mouth felt as if it was on fire.
The boy asked for the lashes instead but after a few lashes he couldn't tolerate the pain. So, ultimately he said that he would pay the fine.
Now he understood that one should always think before speaking.
31. UNUSED RICHES ARE UNLESS
Once there was a miser having a lot of gold. He melted it down in a lump and buried it in a pit. He was very happy that he had hidden his gold safely. So, he kept gloating over his treasure almost all the time. He used to visit the spot regularly where he had hidden the gold.
One of his friend's was keeping an eye on him and one day he discovered the secret. And one night he went to the pit and dug the gold lump for himself.
On his next visit to the spot, the miser lamented on finding no gold over there. Hearing his cries, one of his neighbours came to him and asked what the matter was . The miser replied, "I am ruined. Someone has stolen my treasure.
" The neighbour consoled him and said, "Your money was lying useless. Now, at least it will be of use to someone."
32. CRAVE MORE ; LOSE WHAT YOU HAVE
Once a lion was roaming in the jungle in search of a prey. Luckily, he saw a rabbit sleeping fast under a tree. He was delighted to get a meal with no efforts at all.
The lion was about to spring at the sleeping rabbit when he caught sight of a deer passing by. He thought of going for a bigger prey, as it would be a much nicer meal.
So, he chased the deer but failed to overtake it. He gave up the attempt and returned to the place where the rabbit was sleeping.
Reaching there, the lion saw that the small animal was no longer there. As it was getting dark, it was difficult for the lion to look out for another prey and so he had to remain hungry.
"I have been served right. Had I contented myself with the rabbit, I would not have starved at least", murmured the lion.
What we learn from this story is that greed for more causes loss of what one already has.
33. DON'T ACT HASTILY
One day, Victor was traveling through a train with his parents. All the time he was glancing at his new shoes that his father had bought for him. After some time, he removed his shoes to take a nap.
When he woke up, he found one of the shoes missing. He started crying loudly. His parents tried to console him. At last, his father promised that after reaching home, he would buy him a new pair of shoes.
